Virtual Aduma 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #17 Sonei-ji Temple

Sonei-ji Temple was said to have been founded by Sasaki Ujiyasu (1326-1370), who constructed Kannonji Castle in Omi Province, but it must have been his second son, Mitsutaka (1365-1416), who founded the temple for Ujiyasu to commemorate him 12 years after his death.  Ujiyasu's first son, Yoshinobu (1349-1365) died young.

On September 7th, 1568, Oda Nobunaga (1534-1582) advanced to Kyoto.  On the 12th, he seized Kannonji Castle.  Sasaki Yoshitaka (1521-1598) kept guerrilla fighting in Omi Province until 1574, but his second son, Yoshisada (1547-1620) moved to the Kanto Region.  Presumably, he brought Sonei-ji to Sekiyado in Shimousa Province then.  When Nobunaga attacked Takeda Katsuyori (1546-1582) in Kai Province in 1582, Yoshisada fought for Katsuyori, only to be defeated by Nobunaga again.  Yoshisada's effort, however, paid, and his second son, Takakazu, later became a vassal of Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542-1616).  The temple was moved to its present place in 1663.  The temple shared its fortune with the Sasaki Family.
