Virtual Aduma 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #11 Konren-in Temple

Konren-in Temple was founded sometime between 1504 and 1520 by Priest Kenshu.

Ise Shinkuro (1432-1519) came from Kyoto to Suruga Province in 1469 to make a warring-state-period hero, and actually carried out his plan.  In 1493, he first started occupying Izu Province, which lay east to Suruga Province, and then moved further east, raiding Sagami Province.  In 1504, he crossed Tama River and advanced to Musashi Province.  In 1512, he reached Miura County, the remote peninsula in Sagami Province.  Konren-in Temple was founded when the ancien regime in the Kanto Region started collapsing.

The temple has the self-portrait of Kukai (774-835).

The temple burned down in 1642, and was revived by Priest Jissei in 1658.  It burned down in 1718 again, and was revived in 1736.  Whenever the temple was engulfed in flames, the portrait flew up, perched on a big tree, and escaped from fires.
