Virtual Aduma 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #12 Hoko-in Temple

Tradition says that Prince Ousu (82-111) arrived at Minato in Fusa Province in 110, and joined Kibi Takehiko and Otomo Takehi at where Matsudo Shrine is located today.  Since then the place was called Machidokoro, literally Waiting Place, which was later mispronounced Matsudo.  Locals built a small shrine to commemorate the prince.

In 1626, Matsudo Shrine was built at where the small shrine had been.

It is unknown when Hoko-in Temple was founded, but it must have been sometime after 1626 as it was a shrine temple of Matsudo Shrine.  The temple came to belong to the Shingon Sect at the turn of the 18th century.
