Virtual Aduma 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #9 Shinsho-in Temple

Shinsho-in Temple was founded in 806 as a shrine temple of Shibamata-Hachiman Shrine, which is located on an ancient tomb.  The precincts must have been a holy place since prehistoric times.  The tomb is 30 meters in diameter and is supposed to have been built either in the 6th or 7th century.  The place name Shibamata was recorded in 721 as Shimamata.  The precincts have an itabi dated 1296.

The temple burned down in the Battle of Konodai in 1538 and 1564.

In the Pax Tokugawa, it burned down in 1722, was rebuilt in 1761 by Priest Kugan.  It burned down again in 1816, and was rebuilt by Priest Jissei the next year.  The 1855 Earthquake hit the estuary of the Edo River hardest, and the temple was destroyed.  It was in 1872 that the temple buildings were rebuilt.
