Virtual Aduma 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #21 Fudo-in Temple

Taira Masakado (903-940) was the leader of the largest insurgent troops against the ancient central government.  He intended to build an independent country in the Kanto Region.  Priest Kancho was dispatched to Shimousa to support the suppression of Masakado.  He brought 2 Acalanatha statues, and put one in Narita, where Shinsho-ji Temple was founded to enshrine the statue, and the other in Sugano.  The hut where the latter statue was enshrined came to be called Fudo-in.  Fudo is the contraction of the Japanese translation of Acalanatha.

It is unknown when the temple was founded.  In 1858, the temple lost its documents and treasures in fire, but the statue alone survived.
