Virtual Kameda Domain 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #30 Seiko-in Temple
It is unknown when Seiko-in Temple was founded in Futago Village along Futago River, which is a small river and runs from east to west into the Sea of Japan. The river was a small river between Michikawa River in the north and Kinu River in the south. The village was a small village between Michikawa Village and Akotsu Port, and was ruled by Oizumi Sanukinokami at the end of the Warring States Period (1467-1568).
Presumably, Seiko-in Temple was founded to impose the danka system to the village.
It is unknown when Shinmei-sha Shrine was founded in Futago Village. Sometime between 1658 and 1673, the Goddess Ukemochi object was netted in the sea. In 1697, Ukemochi Shrine was founded in the precincts of Shinmei-sha Shrine. In 1935, Ukemochi Shrine was merged to Shinmei-sha Shrine.
Seiko-in Temple is located on the left bank of Futago River and Futago-Shinmei-sha Shrine on the right bank. The 2 seem to be the only religious institutions in the Futago area. They stand at the mouth of the valley as if they were the guards. The question is whether they guarded against the intrusion from the sea or from the mountains.
