Virtual Edo Bando 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #1 Enman-ji Temple
Enman-ji Temple was founded in 1710 by Mokujiki Giko, who was said to be a grandson of Ashikaga Yoshiteru (1536-1565), the 13th shogun of the Ashikaga Shogunate.
Yoshiteru was assassinated by Miyoshi Yoshitsugu (1549-1573), who was the successor of Nagayoshi (1522-1564), and who was practically the last head of the Miyoshi Family, at Nijo Palace in Kyoto.
The title Mokujiki was given to those monks and priests who ate only fruits and nuts. Moku meant a wood and jiki meant to eat.
Enman-ji Temple functions as the Ninna-ji Temple Tokyo Office.
