Virtual Musashi 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #31 Rinsen-ji Temple

Rinsen-ji Temple was founded in 1297, and was revived by Priest Hon'yo (?-1487).

In 1297, Hojo Sadatoki (1272-1311) issued the first debt cancellation order to relieve minor samurai.  However, the order instead made it harder for those samurai to borrow money.

When Hon'yo died, the Chokyo War broke out in the Kanto Region between the Yamanouchi-Uesugi and Ogigayatsu-Uesugi Families.  As the Uesugi Clan had succeeded to the Regent of the Kanto Deputy Shogunate for generations, the war undermined the foundation of the deputy shogunate, or the ancien regime in the region.  It lasted till 1505.

The temple enshrines 2 Avalokitesvara statues, and the #30 deity of the Musashi 33 Kannon Pilgrimage is the one which is said to be Arya Avalokitesvara, who is the human-figure prototype of the other 6 metamorphoses.
