Virtual Kameda Domain 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #32 Miroku-ji Temple
Minamoto Yoriyoshi (998-1075) was appointed as the governor of Mutsu Province in 1051. It was on February 16th, 1063, that Yoriyoshi returned to Kyoto in triumph with the heads of Abe Sadato (1019-1062) and Fujiwara Tsunekiyo (?-1062). He built another Hachiman-gu Shrine in Iwaki County, Mutsu Province, in 1063, to show his gratitude for his victory to God Hachiman, the guardian god of the Minamoto Clan.
Iwaki Takatada unified Iwaki County, Mutsu Province, in 1442. Although the Iwaki Family claimed to belong to the Taira Clan, they worshiped Hachiman-gu Shrine in Iwaki County. When Iwaki Yoshitaka (1609-1672), the 1st lord of the Kameda Domain, moved to Kameda in 1623, he invited Hachiman-gu Shrine to Akotsu Port town.
Miroku-ji Temple's sango is Matsuo-san. Since the 17th century, Hachiman Shrine's priesthood has been succeeded by the Matsuo Family. Presumably, Miroku-ji Temple was founded as its shrine temple, and was abolished after the Meiji Restoration Government issued the Gods and Buddhas Separation Order in 1868.
