Virtual Old Tsugaru 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #23 Koyasan-Kannon-do Hall
Koyasan-Kannon-do Hall is said to have been founded as early as around 826. Its principal image is Eleven-Faced Ekadasamukha. When the hall was constructed in 1794, soil from each of the member temples of the Saigoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage was brought and buried underneath the hall. Visiting here is said to be equivalent to visiting all the member temples of the Saigoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage. As you climb the stairs on the left side of the hall, you will find 33 stone statues of Arya Avalokitesvara, who is the human-figure prototype of the other 6 metamorphoses, enshrined.
The hall became Entsu-ji Temple in 1793 but was abolished later. The hall is maintained by Honkaku-ji Temple.
