Virtual Old Tsugaru 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #18 ?
The Ando Pirates, who were based in the Tosa Port, invited the god of Hiyoshi Taisha Shrine, the guardian god of the Tiantai Sect, to Aiuchi Village in the north of Tosa Lake. The shrine came to be called Sannobo-Hiyoshi Shrine. There could have been a place named Aino somewhere around Aiuchi, and an Avalokitesvara image might have been enshrined there. As the shrine became obsolete after the pirates were defeated in the 15th century by the Nanbu Clan, no record is left about the Avalokitesvara image in the precincts.
Matsumae Hironaga (1738-1801) finished compiling 60 volumes of the historical source book Fukuyama Hifu with the historical materials, records, and documents of the Matsumae Domain in 1780. Due to a record in the compilation, Sannobo followed the Ando Pirates when they fled to Hokkaido after being defeated by the Nanbu Clan in the 15th century. It is unknown whether Sannobo is an individual monk or a religious group.
