Virtual New Mutsu 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #21 Kannon-ji Temple

Entsu-in Temple was founded in 802.  It belonged to the Tiantai Sect.  Sugawara Tatewaki revived the temple, transferred it to Caodong Chan School, and renamed it Kannon-ji in 1557.  Tatewaki was based in Arikabe Fort nearby and was subject to the Osaki Family.

In 1354, Shiba Iekane (1308-1356) was appointed to be the Regent of Mutsu Province.  His son, Tadamochi (1327-1383), followed him.  As Iekane died in the year, Tadamochi became the regent.  In the 1360's, he changed his family name to Osaki.

When Norikane was the 7th head of the Osaki Family, they confronted the Kasai Family in the north.  Arikabe Fort was in the forefront.  When Yoshikane (?-1529) was the 9th head of the Osaki Family, the family declined.  Yoshitaka (1548-1603) was the 12th and the last head of the Osaki Family.  In 1571, Arikabe Fort was occupied by the Kasai Family, and the Arikabe Family was based in the fort.  It is unknown whether the Arikabe Family was brought by the Kasai Family or overpowered their superior, the Sugawara Family, having secret communication with the Kasai Family.  Arikabe Tanemichi married a daughter of Koiwa Nobuyuki.  His son, Taneaki, married a daughter of Narasaka Naganobu (?-1552), who died of a disease at the age of 38.  Taneaki's son, Tanekata, was documented.

In 1590, both the Osaki and Kasai Families were "dismissed" by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-1598).  On October 16th of the year, revolts against Hideyoshi's rule broke out.  On July 4th, 1591, the revolts were finally suppressed.  On August 14th, Date Masamune (1567-1636) summoned the leaders of the revolts to Sueyama, Momunofu County, Mutsu Province, and killed them all.  The then head of the Arikabe Family is said to have been one of the victims.
