Virtual Shonai 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #30 Shoko-ji Temple
Mt. Amamori is a peak in the caldera of Mt. Gassan. Raiden Rock used to be in Mt. Amamori but has collapsed. The rock used to be a holy place from prehistoric days. Raiden Shrine was founded in Takadera Village, Tagawa County, Dewa Province, to pray to the rock from the foot of the mountain. As Shinto and Buddhism syncretized, Shoko-ji Temple was founded as its shrine temple in 718, when Ideha County was promoted to Ideha Province.
Raiden Shrine enshrined the statue of Thousand-Armed Sahasrabhuja. After the Meiji Restoration, the statue was moved to Shoko-ji Temple.
Chilly rain drops soak my fur coat.
However cold I feel,
The temple's blessings are all around.
