Virtual Shonai 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #28 Ryukaku-ji Temple

Ryugaku-ji Temple was founded sometime between 1166 and 1168 in Oizumi Manor, Tagawa County, Dewa Province.  In those days, Fujiwara Hidehira (1122-1187) not only ruled 6 counties in Mutsu Province but was also the commander of both Mutsu and Ideha Provinces.  Ideha Province was practically ruled by the Oshu-Fujiwara or Northern Fujiwara Clan.  Oizumi Manor was owned by the Fujiwara Clan in Kyoto, but samurai there were under Hidehira's command authority. Ryukaku-ji Temple was founded in the manor.

In the Warring States Period, Tsurugaoka Castle used to have 7 forts to defend its keep.  Ryukaku-ji Temple's original location was in the south of the third fort.  In Pax Tokugawana, the castle town grew and the temple's surrounding area was redeveloped. The temple was relocated along the Hamanaka Highway.  In 1612, it was relocated to its present place.
