Virtual Mogami 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #30 Hannya-in Temple
An itinerant old Buddhist monk arrived at Nyu Village, Murayama County, Ideha Province, with his guardian Buddhist image, Arya Avalokitesvara, who is the human-figure prototype of the other 6 metamorphoses. Unluckily, he became ill. He told the villagers that he was going to die of disease because Arya Avalokitesvara wanted to stay there. After his death, the villagers enshrined the image following the request of the deceased.
Red clay was found around Niu Village. In ancient Japan, red clay was called niu.
In 1728, the temple was moved from the foot of the hill to its present place on the hillside.
