Virtual Mogami 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #28 Sogen-in Temple
Tendo Yoriyasu enshrined Thousand-Armed Sahasrabhuja in Shionosawa, Murayama Countyu, Ideha Province. His offspring, Hino Moroshige, built a fort and its Kannon-do Hall, and ruled the area on the left bank of the Mogami River. Nobesawa was on the opposite bank and was ruled by Nobesawa Mitsunobu (1544-1591). In 1584, the left bank was invaded by Mitsunobu, and the fort and hall were set on fire. They burned down only with its temple gate left about 500 meters upstream from Funabashi Shrine. The Thousand-Armed Sahasrabhuja statue was carbonized and was moved to Sogen-in Temple.
A bay horse was born in Yokoyama Village, Murayama County, Ideha Province. The lord of the domain, Tozawa Masanobu (1640-1722), brought it to Edo. On January 18th, 1657, the Great Fire of Meireki broke out in Edo. The horse successfully carried Masanobu to Edo Castle but died due to the burn in the fire. Its ashes were brought back to Yokoyama and were enshrined in Funabashi Shrine.
