Virtual Adachi Bando 33 Kannon Pilgrimage (the South) #17 Byodo-ji Temple
It is unknown when Byodo-ji Temple was founded in Sasame Village, Adachi County, Musashi Province. Its precincts have an itabi dated 1494. The temple could have been older than that.
The village used to be part of Sasame Monor. It is unknown when the manor was developed. Under the Kamakura Shogunate, every manor was divided between its original owner and a samurai who was appointed as its steward. Sasame Manor's steward half was presented to Tsuruogaoka-Hachiman Shrine in 1293.
The itabi was built in the midst of the Chokyo War, which was fought in the Kanto Region from 1487 to 1505 between the Yamanouchi-Uesugi and Ogigayatsu-Uesugi Families.
