Virtrual Shinobu Saigoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #3 Kannon-ji Temple
Kannon-ji Temple was founded by Priest Ryohan (?-1572) in Kushitsukuri, Sakitama County, Musashi Province, in 1544. Kushitsukuri literally meant Dunes Made in the local dialect.
The Tone River used to change its watercourse naturally and artificially with its natural levees left along its old waterways. The other rare type of slightly high ground along the Tone River were transverse dunes. The Kanto Region has had strong, dry north winds in winters since 7,000 years ago. The transverse dunes formed perpendicular to the winds.
The largest sand dune in the area, and the largest in Japan as an inland sand dune, is Shidami Sand Dune in Kazo City. It is 2,500 meters long, 300 meters wide, and 5 to 10 meters tall from the surrounding lowlands. As a transverse dune, its windward north slope is mild and its leeward south slope is steep.
