Virtrual Shinobu Saigoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #1 Shinkan-ji Temple

Shinkan-ji Temple was founded by Priest Kenkyo (?-1242).  A cave in the back of the temple had the itabi for him.  As itabi was a type of grave popular among samurai, Kenkyo might have been a samurai before he became a Buddhist priest.  In the same year, Hojo Yasutoki (1183-1242) died.  The Azuma Kagami, which was compiled after 1266 under the directive of the Hojo Clan, and which was a chronology of events occurring in Japan at the beginning of the Kamakura Shogunate, mysteriously lacks the entries in the years when Yasutoki was born and died.

Its precincts have Omi-Shinkanji Burial Mound, which was supposedly built in the 7th century.  The precincts might have been a holy place since ancient times, and tradition says an original temple was founded by Sakanoue Tamuramaro (758-811) there.
