Virtual Akigawa 34 Kannon Pilgrimage #31 Tokuun-in Temple
Tokuun-in Temple is said to have been founded by Priest Eidai (?-1557). In the 1550's, Hojo Ujiyasu (1515-1571) ruled the southern part of the Kanto Region relatively steadily. As Eidai came from the Akigawa 34 Kannon Pilgrimage #2 Kogon-ji Temple in Tokura, which had Tokura Fortress nearby, the ruler of Otsu village could have been subject to the lord of the fortress, although it is unknown whether the Oishi Family had already replaced the Komiya Family over the rule of the fortress.
Tokuun-in Temple's precincts have an itabi dated December 15th, 1349, it must have been a holy place or a graveyard after the collapse of the Kamakura Shogunate in 1333 at the latest. In leap June of 1349, Ashikaga Motouji (1340-1367) became the first Kanto Deputy Shogun under the Ashikaga Shogunate in Kyoto. As the samurai buried under the itabi used the era name Jowa, he must have expressed his support for the Northern Court, or the Ashikaga Shogunate, against the Southern Court, in the hope of authorization for his rule over Otsu Village.
