Virtual Akigawa 34 Kannon Pilgrimage #30 Myoko-in Temple

Myoko-in Temple was founded in 1555 by Priest Saido.  When Otsu Village opened Nisshin School at the beginning of the Meiji Era (1868-1912), the temple was used as its school building.

In the Chokyo War (1487-1505), the Uesugi Clan suffered from internal conflicts.  The Yamauchi-Uesugi and the Ogigaya-Uesugi Families conflicted with each other, involving the Inugake-Uesugi and the Takuma-Uesugi Families.  Through the war, however, whole the hyphenated Uesugi Families spelled the downfall.

Tomosada (1525-1546), the last head of the Ogigaya-Uesugi Family, was killed in the Siege of Kawagoe Castle, and the family died out.  Uesugi Norimasa (1523-1579), the last head of the Yamauchi-Uesugi Family, flew to Echigo Province in 1552, relying on Nagao Kagetora (1530-1578), who is more known with his Buddhist name Kenshin.  With the support of Kagetora, Norimasa invaded the northern part of Musashi Province in 1555.  That might have caused more people to seek a sanctuary in the ravine of the upper stream of Aki River.
