Virtual Yamanote 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #25 Anzen-ji Temple

Anzen-ji Temple was founded in 1608 in Shimizudani, Kojimachi, Edo.  Some say it belonged to the School of Nichiren (1222-1282) at first, while others say it was founded by Monk Gyozen, who belonged to the Shingon Sect.  When the Wadakura Gate of Edo Castle was built, the temple was moved to its present place in 1634, when Gyokan (?-1695) was the priest of the temple.  He also converted the temple to the Tiantai Sect.

The temple enshrines the statue of Arya Avalokitesvara, who is the human-figure prototype of the other 6 metamorphoses.  The statue is said to have been carved by Ennin (794-864).
