Virtual Yamanote 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #20 Senju-in Temple
It is unknown when Senju-in Temple was first founded. In 1635, a year before Hachisuka Tadateru (1611-1652), the second lord of the Awa Domain, built the Ushigome Gate of Edo Castle in 1636, 7 temples including Senju-in Temple were moved to Ushigome Village. In 1698, the area was named Ushigome-Benzaiten-cho, because of the Benzaiten Hall there. The temple’s main deity, a thousand-armed Sahasrabhuja statue was said to have been made by Visvakarman in India. Who was Visvakarman? Vishvakarman is a craftsman deity in Hinduism.
It is unknown when Senju-in Temple was abolished. The Sahasrabhuja statue is enshrined in Nanzo-in Temple today.
