Virtual Quasi-Chichibu 34 Kannon Pilgrimage #34 Seirin-ji Temple
Seikan, presumably a wealthy farmer’s posthumous Buddhist name given before his death, built a retreat in 1692, purchased an Arya Avalokitesvara statue carved by Genshin (942-1017), enshrined it in the retreat, and died in 1694.
At the turn of the 18th century, economic activities became brisk in Japan. In rural areas, cash crops were raised, and manufacturing industries developed. The wealthy class was formed even among independent farmers and townspeople.
The retreat was turned into a temple in 1755 with the temple name Seirin-ji, and the temple bell was cast in 1768.
In the middle of the 18th century, Tanuma Okitsugu (1719-1788) began to stand out as a politician. He turned the society into mercantilism. All in all, Seirin-ji Temple was a product of the monetary economy in the Edo Period.
