Virtual Kako County Chichibu 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #6 Jokan-ji Temple

 

     It is unknown exactly when Jokan-ji Temple was founded by the monk Jokan on a hill near Shimoishino Tumulus No. 5 (Atagoyama Tumulus) in present-day Miki City. To understand its origin, one must first look at the Kunikane Fortified Residence.

     The residence is thought to have been built sometime between 1532 and 1570 by a branch of the Kako family. It was likely destroyed when Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536–1598) invaded Harima Province, after which Jokan-ji Temple was revived on the site in 1703.

     Presumably, "Jokan" was the Buddhist name of a Kako family member, and the original Jokan-ji Temple doubled as a satellite outpost for the residence.
