Virtual Kawabe 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #25 Hosho-ji Temple
Hosho-ji Temple was founded in Naka Village, Kawabe County, Settsu Province, in 1587, when Toyotomi Hideyoshi became hostile towards the Christian faith and ordered the expulsion of all missionaries and that all Christian lords should renounce their faith. Justo Takayama (1552-1615) proclaimed that he would not give up his faith and would rather give up his lands in Settsu Province.
Naka Village became a fief of Tada-in Temple (today's Tada Shrine) in Kamakura Period (1185-1333). It is unknown by whom the village was owned and ruled in 1587, but it was under the direct control of the Tokugawa Shogunate at the beginning of Edo Period (1603-1867).
When Itami Airport was expanded in 1937, the temple moved to its present place. Some of the village became part of the airport and, accordingly, was annexed to Toyonaka City of Osaka Prefecture.
For your information, when expansion of Osaka Itami Airport began in 1935, boarding houses for Korean workers who worked on the expansion were built in the village, and many Korean residents in Japan remained in the area after World War II, forming a settlement. The area is on government-owned land for Osaka Itami Airport, and the Japanese government demanded that they vacate, claiming that they were "illegally occupying" the area. However, since 2001, Itami City, Hyogo Prefecture, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism have held discussions with the residents, and an agreement was reached for everyone to move to public housing in nearby Kuwazu 4-chome. In 2009, all households had relocated, and a monument was erected on the site.
