Virtual Kubota Castle Town 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #7-1 Hottai-in Temple
It is unknown when Kumano Shrine was founded along Ushijima Lagoon, but it was moved in 1600 to where Sanko Kumano Shrine Satomiya is. The lagoon was there even in 1647, but rice fields were gradually reclaimed from the lagoon and Ushijima Village was organized in the reclaimed land. In the 1780's, Cintamanicakra, who usually has 6 arms and holds chintamani (a wish-fulfilling jewel) in one of the six, was enshrined in the shrine, which became the #7 of Kubota Castle Town 33 Kannon Pilgrimage. Annualy, Cintamanicakra Festival was held on March 17th, and Kumano-Gongen Festival was held on September 9th.
The Cintamanicakra image was moved to Hottai-ji Temple nearby after the Gods and Buddhas Separation Order in 1868.
In 1911, Kumano and Sanko Shrines were merged and Sanko Shrine became Sanko Kumano Shrine Main Shrine.
