Virtual New Mutsu 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #13 Josai-ji Temple

Josai-ji Temple was founded in Shinobu County, Mutsu Province, in 881.  It was located at the northern end of the Fukushima Basin.  The foundation might tell us that rice fields were developed there in the 9th century.

It is unknown when Josai-ji Temple was abolished, with its Kannon-do Hall left.  In the east of Kannonzawa, we can find the place name Josaiji.  Presumably, the hall was moved to its present place after the abolishment of Josai-ji Temple.  The hall is taken care of by Daisho-ji Temple, which was founded in the Edo Period.  Its main hall was rebuilt in 1765.  Presumably, due to the movement to abolish Buddhism and to destroy Buddhist images at the beginning of the Meiji Period, surrounding villagers might have chosen the newer building to survive.

Anyway, the #13 membership of the New Mutsu 33 Kannon Pilgrimage has been also transfered to Daisho-ji Temple.
