Virtual Old Mutsu 33 Kannon Pigrimage #21 Iwagami-ji Temple

It is unknown when Iwagami-ji Temple was founded in Hienuku County, Mutsu Province, along Hienuki River.  Hienuki County was organized in 811, when the Old Mutsu 33 Kannon was organized, and became under military rule in 812.

Iwagami literally means Rock God.  The precincts must have been a holy place even in prehistoric times, when northern foreigners were dominant in the area.

A gigantic rock stands in the back of the main hall where Eleven-Faced Ekadasamukha is enshrined.
