Virtual Old Akita 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #29 Takaiwa Shrine

Mount Takaiwa has megaliths.  Takaiwa Shrine was founded on the side of the mountain sometime between 857 and 859.  Later, Mitsujo-ji Temple was founded as its shrine temple.

The Asari Family ruled the area since the 13th century.

Fujikoto River is a branch of Yoneshiro River, and was the Asari Family's battlefront against the Ando Pirates.  Mt. Takaiwa was located on the Asari Family's side of the river.

The Ando Pirates invaded the area and burned the temple down in 1582.  On May 17th, 1582, Asari Katsuyori was poisoned to death in a feast held by Ando Chikasue (1539-1587).  Katsuyori's son, Yorihira, succeeded to the headship of the family.  On January 8th, 1598, Yorihira suddenly died of a disease or was assassinated by Ando Sanesue (1576-1660), and the Asari Family collapsed.
