Virtual Old Akita 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #27 Shinzan Shrine

Emperor Otarashi ruled Japan in the middle of the 4th century.  In the 25th and 27th years of his reign, he dispatched Takeuchi Sukune to the northern coast of the Sea of Japan.  Sukune arrived at Oga Peninsula, climbed Mt. Wakiide, and enshrined Niniginomikoto and Takemikazuchi there.  Buddhism arrived at the mountain sometime between 859 and 877, and Kobo-ji Temple was founded as its shrine temple.  It is unknown whether Urabe Yasumasa presented an Avalokitesvara image before the foundation of the temple or after.

When Sugae Masumi (1754-1829) visited the temple in 1810, he found a temple bell dated 1362.  In 1391, the temple was changed from Tiantai Sect to Shingon Sect.

After the Meiji Restoration, the temple was abolished.
