Virtual Old Akita 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #23 Hoda-ji Temple

Tradition says that Ando Morisue founded Hoda-ji Temple, inviting Priest Ryoin (1319-1400) from Soji-ji Temple in Noto Province.

There were 2 well known Ando Morisue's.  One was based in Tosa Port and the other lived in Akita.  However, they were both a little bit born too late to found a temple in 1349.  There could have been another Ando Morisue, who was born at the beginning of the 14th century at the latest.  Anyway, Hoda-ji Temple was founded too late to be presented an Avalokitesvara image by Urabe Yasumasa in the 1040's.

Hoda-ji Temple is also said to have been brought from north, from the basin of Yoneshiro River.  Probably, Morisue brought it from his homeland.  The fact that he invited Priest Ryoin (1319-1400) from Soji-ji Temple in Noto Province shows how large the Ando Pirates' network was.  All in all, the change caused by the pirates was so drastic that what the prehistoric religion looked like, how it was amalgamated with Shinto, or how the amalgamated religion was syncretized with Buddhism were all wiped out.
