Virtual Okitama 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #4 Ten'yo-ji Temple

It is unknown when Ten'yo-ji Temple was founded, but it is documented that the temple was rebuilt in 1414.  Tradition says that it was founded sometime between 806 and 809, and that its hall was built by carpenters from Hida Province.  In those days, the northern foreigners rebelled against the Imperial Court and the Ideha Provincial Government office retreated south to Tagawa County.  As the Imperial Court sent farmer-soldiers from other provinces to Ideha Province, good carpenters might have been included in those farmer-soldiers.  They might have needed a Buddhist temple in Okitama County.

Address: 1956 Naka, Iide, Nishiokitama District, Yamagata 999-0601
