Virtual Adachi Bando 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #5 Seiko-ji Temple

 

     Seiko-ji Temple was founded by Priest Unkai (?-1698) presumably at the beginning of the Edo Period, when many temples were founded because the Tokugawa Shogunate ordered every family to belong to a Buddhist temple.  Those families supported temples economically.  Surprisingly, Seiko-ji Temple has no supporting families.  There could have been an untold history about its foundation.

     The precincts have the Kogaito Shell Mound, which dates back to about 5,000 B.C.

The shell mound is mainly made up with freshwater clams, but it also includes Japanese littlenecks and clams which are picked in the sea.  The composition shows us how the Komuro area looked like about 7,000 years ago,
