Virtual Bando 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #26 Kiyotaki-ji Temple

 

     Tradition says that Prince Shotoku (574-622) carved a statue of Arya Avalokitesvara, who is the human-figure prototype of the other 6 metamorphoses.  Somehow or other, the statue was brought to the southern foot of Mt. Tsukuba in 607.  At the beginning of the 9th century, Tokuitsu moved it to the hillside.  Later, Kannon-do Hall was built for it at the present place at the foot of the hill, or at the foot of the Asashi Pass.

     Ono no Komachi was a Japanese tanka poet, one of the six best tanka poets of the early Heian Period (794-1185).  She was also known for her great beauty, and Komachi is today a synonym for feminine beauty in Japan.  Almost nothing of her life is known for certain.  Only her poetry exchanges with her lovers are preserved in the Collection of Japanese Poems of Ancient and Modern Times.  She was most active in composing tanka poems around the middle of the 9th century.  Because of her legendary beauty, there are as many as 17 candidates for her grave across Japan, including the one near Kiyotaki-ji Temple.  According to local tradition, he crossed or tried to cross Asahi Pass, and…..
