Virtual Modern Edo 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #29 Zenryu-ji Temple

Zenryu-ji Temple was founded by Kanamori Nagaaki in 1552 on the left bank of the Old Iruma River.  In 1552, Hojo Ujiyasu (1515-1571) ousted Uesugi Norimasa (1523-1579), the last Regent of the Kanto Deputy Shogunate, from the Kanto Region to Echigo Province, and ancien regime in the region collapsed.  It is unknown whether Nagaaki built the temple to remember the good old days or to celebrate the dawn of the new era.

The temple was moved to its present place, on the right bank of the Old Iruma River, the Sumida River today, in 1670.  On February 4th in the year, a big fire broke out in Shitaya , burned almost all the temples there, and it spread to the right bank of Sumida River.  The temple might have burned down in the fire.
