Virtual Tama River 34 Kannon Pilgrimage #15 Ryugen-ji Temple

 

     It is not recorded when Ryugen-ji Temple was founded.  The temple has the Mahakala statue, which is said to have been carved by Saicho (767-822), and the statue of Arya Avalokitesvara, who is the human-figure prototype of other 6 metamorphoses.  The statue is said to have been carved by Ennin (794-864).  It is unknown whether the foundation of the temple was contemporary with the two, or on one of Medieval days.
