Virtual North Kawachi 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #18 Shoho-ji Temple

Until 1622, Shoho-ji Temple used to be located on the heights of the Kiyotaki Hills.

Excavations since 1969 have revealed that Shoho-ji Temple was founded in the late 7th century.  Buildings excavated include the Inner Gate built on foundation stones, the East Pagoda with stonework, and the Lecture Hall built with its pillars in the ground.  The buildings appear to have been roofed with tiles.  Many tiles depicting lotus flowers have been found during excavations.  Pottery from the Heian Period (794-1185) with ink inscriptions bearing the temple's name was also found.

The temple's sango Onoyama suggests a connection to the Uno Family, an ancient powerful family of immigrants.  They instructed horse breeding in this area and are mentioned in documents such as the Nihon Shoki.  It is possible that the Uno Family had some kind of connection to Empress Unonosarara (645-703), who shares the same name.
