Virtual Yashima Domain 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #17 Zoryu-ji Temple
Shimomura-date Fortress was built by the Shimomura Family sometime between 1467 and 1469. Zoryu-ji Temple was founded in the fortress. Shimomura Hikojiro's territory was reduced by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-1598) in 1590. He revolted but was suppressed in 1598. Shimomura Fortress was destroyed and Zoryu-ji Temple was moved to its present place.
Ishizawa River meanders or turns over 180 degrees near Kura Village, and Shimomura-date Fortress was almost surrounded by the river. The river was a natural moat of the fortress. The temple was moved out of the strategic point presumably to show it has no intention to be a fort again. The fortress was abolished with Suwa Shrine left on its site. It is unknown when the God Takeminakata was invited from Suwa, Shinano Province. Takeminakata has been worshiped as a god of wind, water and agriculture.
