Virtual Adachi Bando 33 Kannon Pilgrimage (the South) #11 Shirahata-Kannon-do Temple

It is unknown when Shirahata-Kannon-do Temple was founded in Shirahata Village, Adachi County, Musashi Province.

Tawara Tota (891-958) was an official of the Shimotsuke Provincial Government.  He was from Tawara Village, Kawachi County, Shimotsuke Province.  In 939, Taira Masakado (?-940) tried to be independent from Japan in the Kanto Region.  When Tota suppressed Masakado’s revolt, he camped in the place which was later called Shirahata, namely White Flag, as Tota raised white flags when he prayed for victory.  The area jutted out into the marshland  which used to be the sea centuries before.

Shirahata-Kannon-do Temple enshrines Arya Avalokitesvara, who is the human-figure prototype of the other 6 metamorphoses.  Its precincts have stone statues and monuments dated 1644.  Although it is priest-less, it still has its graveyard, which is taken care of by Io-ji Temple nearby.
