Virtual Shinobu Chichibu 34 Kannon Pilgrimage #27 Taisho-ji Temple
It is unknown when Taisho-ji Temple was founded in Niibori Village, Hara County, Musashi Province.
Sometime between 1596 and 1615, a new canal was constructed and the area came to be called Niibori, namely New Canal. With the canal water, new rice fields were developed in the south of Niibori, and the area was named Niibori-Shinden, namely New Canal New Fields. Niibori-Shinden Village was independent from Niibori sometime between 1644 and 1647. The new villagers needed a new temple.
Taisho-ji Temple enshrines Horse-Headed Hayagriva. That doesn't necessarily mean horses were raised before the development of rice fields. However, the temple's sango, Aonosan, literally Blue Field Mountain, suggests what the area looked like before the development. The word blue was sometimes used to refer to the color green. Were horses raised in grassy fields?
