Virtual Kodama Saigoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #2 Fumyo-ji Temple
Fumyo-ji Temple was founded by Priest Shochin (?-1661). Its foundation day is unknown. The hill behind the temple has a cave called Iwayado, where Monk Jogon earnestly practiced chanting a prayer to the Buddha. The cave seems to have been the very sanctuary, or the holy of hollies, of the temple. On May 5th, prayers for tens of thousands of souls are performed with thousands of banners every year in front of the cave. In front of the cave, there are 100 Avalokitesvara stone statues.
Ishigami Shrine stands between the temple and the cave. The shrine was founded in 1596. Presumably, the temple was also founded almost in the same period.
Kodaira is a typical Japanese mountain village.
