Virtual Iruhi Bando 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #10 Entsu-ji Temple
The Suzume River is a branch of the Ara River. It is about 6 kilometers long, and its river basin's size is about 8.7 square kilometers. People started living in its middle reaches about 7,000 years ago. It is unknown why the area came to be called Gomyo. Although the area was along the river, they irrigated their fields with rain water stored in small reservoirs.
Entsu-ji Temple is supposed to have been founded in Gomyo in the Muromachi Period (1336-1573). The temple was located at the entrance of the climbing course to Monomiyama Fort, namely Watch Fort, which was located along the ridge between Aoyama and Ogura Fortresses. The temple functioned not only religiously but also militarily at the end of the Muromachi Period, or in the Warring States Period (1467-1568).
