Virtual Bando 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #12 Jion-ji Temple

Jion-ji Temple was founded in Ainohara, Saitama County, Musashi Province, by Ennin (794-864) sometime between 824 and 834 before he went to China to study Buddhism.  Before he visited Nikko, he threw a plum, wishing to find a tie of Buddhism.  When he passed Ainohara, he found the fruit sprouting.  He carved a Thousand-Armed Sahasrabhuja standing statue and enshrined it there.

The temple and the statue burned down in the first half of the 17th century, and Priest Tenkai (1536-1643) brought a Thousand-Armed Sahasrabhuja sitting statue from Enryaku-ji Temple.
