Virtual Tama Aqueduct Chichibu 34 Kannon Pilgrimage #2 Hongan-ji Temple

Someone stole a Bhaisajyaguru statue, the guardian Buddhist image of Fujiwara Hidehira (?-1187), when Minamoto Yoritomo (1147-1199) invaded Mutsu Province and destroyed the Mutsu Fujiwara Clan in 1189, brought it back, and enshrined it in Kurumagaeshi Village, Tama County, Musashi Province.

The Kamakura Shogunate, which was founded by Yoritomo, collapsed in 1333.

Later, someone built a hermitage near the Bhaisajyaguru Hall.  3 generations later, the hermitage was burned down, and Okubo Hikoshiro rebuilt it in 1516, and named it Kotoku-in, inviting Priest Ryokai (?-1573).  Miyazaki Yasushige (?-1599) moved it to its present place, and named it Hongan-ji in 1574.  Yasushige became subject to Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616) after the collapse of the Later Hojo Clan in 1590.  The Tokugawa Shogunate collapsed in 1867.
