Virtual Sayama 33 Kannon Pilgrimag #14 Hoju-ji Temple

It is unknown when and where Hoju-ji Temple was founded.  It was abolished in the Great Tempo Famine (1833-1839).

In 1833, heavy rain and cold weather hit Japan.  On January 20th, 1835, Volcan Cosiguina erupted.  Its volcanic ashes spread and made the sun shine red, dark, and gloomy even in Japan in April.  Many farmers and peasants ran away to big cities.  In Edo, the Tokugawa Shogunate built 21 workhouses with a capacity of 5800 each.  They "saved" over 700 thousand in total.  Yet, in Mutsu and Dewa Provinces, more than 100 thousand starved to death.  In Osaka, with 150 to 200 people dying every day, Oshio Heihachiro (1793-1837) revolted against the Tokugawa Shogunate in February, 1837.

Shofuku-ji Temple acquired Hoju-ji's temple-ship and revived it in its present place in 1842.
