Virtual Sayama 33 Kannon Pilgrimag #3 Rokusai-do Temple
It is unknown when Rokusai-do Temple was founded. Rokusai literally means 6 precepts, but here it means the 6 days of a month, when you are supposed to follow 5 precepts of Buddhism: to refrain from killing living beings, stealing, having sexual intercourses, lying, and being intoxicated. Usually, the 6 days were the 8th, 14th, 15th, 23rd, 29th, and 30th days of a month. According to the Sayama 33 Kannon Pilgrimage Travelogue, published in 1805, the temple used to enshrine 6 Avalokiteshvara statues, each of which represented the 6 days. Basically, they performed certain religious events on those 6 days. In some places, markets were held on those 6 days. Rokusai-ichi, namely a 6 precepts market, is still held in Kariya, Onjuku, Shigi, Ohara, Ushiku, Mobara, Otaki, and Choja in Chiba Prefecture.
