Virtual Eastern Edo 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #18 An'yo-ji Temple

It is unknown when An'yo-ji Temple was founded.

Tama (1627-1705), who was the mother of Tokugawa Tsunayoshi (1646-1709), the 5th Shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate, was born near Daitoku-ji Temple in Kyoto.  Her father, Nizaemon, was said to have been a weaver, tatami mat maker, or a greengrocer.  She was adopted by Honjo Munemasa (1580-1639) and, in 1639, became a servant of Man (1624-1711), a concubine of Tokugawa Iemitsu (1604-1651), the third shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate.  Man was a daughter of Rokujo Arizumi (1604-1644), who was a high-ranking aristocrat in Kyoto.  It was, however, Tama not Man that gave birth to Tsunayoshi.  The Honjo Family was promoted, moved to Edo, and made An'yo-ji Temple their family temple.

Hoju-ji Temple was founded by Genshin (942-1017) at Ogu, Toshima County, Musashi Province, in 992.

After the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, An'yo-ji Temple merged with Hoju-ji Temple, and moved to its present place in 1935.
