Virtual Eastern Edo 33 Kannon Pilgrimage #10 Kuhon-ji Temple

Kuhon-ji Temple was founded in 1598 by Priest Gin'yo, and was revived in 1629 by Priest Gintetsu (?-1667), who was from Omi Province and who died in Hakudo-ji Temple in Ise Province.

The 1657 Meireki Great Fire burned 60-70 percent of Edo and killed 30-100 thousand people.  In Asakusa alone, rivers and canals were packed with 23,000 bodies.  After the fire, the second priest of Kuhon-ji Temple, Tenzui (?-1684), built a big Amitabha sitting statue in its precincts.   The statue was casted by Hasegawa Masutsugu.  Although the temple buildings burned down in the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, the statue survived.
