Osaka 33 Kannon Pilgrimage

Osaka 33 Kannon Pilgrimage was organized in the 1660's.  The pilgrimage was so popular that it was mentioned in the Joruri narrative songs of Chikamatsu Monzaemon (1653-1725): such as the Love Suicide at Sonezaki, which was first performed in 1703, and the Red Leaves in April, which was first performed in 1706.

In Kyoto, Rakuyo 33 Kannon Pilgrimage was organized by Emperor Go-Shirakawa (1127-1192), declined after the Onin War (1467-1477), and was revived by Emperor Reigen (1654-1732) in 1665.  In Edo, Edo 33 Kannon Pilgrimage was organized in 1698.  In the second half of the 17th century, ordinary citizens enjoyed tourism, yet for most of them, visiting large-scale pilgrimages,  such as Saigoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage and Bando 33 Kannon Pilgrimage, was still hard to do, and micro-tourism pilgrimages were organized for their convenience.
